En aquel tiempo, Jesús, mientras subía a la montaña, fue llamando a los que él quiso, y se fueron con él. A doce los hizo sus compañeros, para enviarlos a predicar, con poder para expulsar demonios. Así constituyó el grupo de los Doce: Simón, a quien dio el sobrenombre de Pedro, Santiago el de Zebedeo y su hermano Juan, a quienes dio el sobrenombre de Boanerges –Los Truenos–, Andrés, Felipe, Bartolomé, Mateo, Tomás, Santiago el de Alfeo, Tadeo, Simón el Celotes y Judas Iscariote, que lo entregó (San Marcos 3, 13-19).
