El Santo Padre Francisco, bajo propuesta del Consejo de los Cardenales, ha aprobado ad experimentum, el Estatuto del nuevo Dicasterio para los Laicos, la familia y la vida, en el cual se confluirán desde el 1 de septiembre de 2016, los actuales Pontificios Consejos para los laicos y para la Familia. En dicha fecha los dos dicasterios cesarán sus funciones y serán suprimidos, siendo derrocados los artículos 131-134 y 139-141 de la Constitución Apostólica Pastor Bonus, de 28 de junio de 1988.
