A partir del mes de agosto comenzarán las excavaciones arqueológicas en uno de los pocos lugares bíblicos importantes que quedaban sin estudiar, y donde fue venerada durante dos décadas el Arca de la Alianza. Se trata de Kiryat-Yearim, un enclave de Judea situado a 13 kilómetros al oeste de Jerusalén en tiempos de los jueces y del Rey David, en torno a la colina donde hoy se alza el monasterio de Deir El-Azar.
Los trabajos arqueológicos serán dirigidos por Israel Finkelstein, de la Universidad de Tel Aviv, y Christophe Nicolle y Thomas Römer, del Colegio de Francia.
“El lugar es importante por varias razones”, explicó Finkelstein a The Times of Israel: “Es un lugar grande y central en las colinas de Jerusalén que hasta ahora no había sido estudiado. Tal vez sea el único sitio clave de Judea que no ha sido sometido a una excavación arqueológica sistemática”.
El monasterio que hay allí actualmente fue construido en el siglo XX y está consagrado a Nuestra Señora del Arca de la Alianza. Se alza sobre las ruinas de un edificio bizantino y se cree que el terreno está relativamente poco alterado por las intervenciones a lo largo de los siglos.
E incluso es probable que, enterrado, pueda existir un antiguo templo, cuyo descubrimiento aportase a los expertos nuevos datos sobre el culto judío en tiempos del Rey David.
En los capítulos 4 a 6 del primer libro de Samuel se cuenta la derrota de Israel a manos de los filisteos, quienes se apoderaron del Arca y la tuvieron consigo siete meses, cuando se la devolvieron: “Fueron, pues, los habitantes de Kiryat-Yearim y subieron el arca de Yahveh, llevándola a la casa de Abinadab, sobre la colina, y consagraron a su hijo Elazar para guardar el arca de Yahveh. Y pasó mucho tiempo después que fue el arca depositada en Kiryat-Yearim, esto es, veinte años, y toda la casa de Israel suspiró en pos de Yahveh” (I Sam 7, 1-2).
Esa colina donde vivía Abinadab es la que ocuparía ahora el monasterio. Allí se conservó hasta que el Rey David decidió llevarla a Jerusalén, y por tanto tuvo que ser un lugar sagrado: “El lugar donde estuvo el Arca de la Alianza no pudo ser un campo o bajo un árbol, tuvo que ser un importante lugar de culto”, dice Finkelstein. A partir del verano se verá si aparecen sus restos.
