Etimología: «el saludable», en griego. De origen griego (Atenas).
Fue papa por unos cuatro años, aprox.: 138 hasta su muerte en 142. Determinó varias atribuciones del clero y definió los grados de la jerarquía eclesiástica. Instituyó el padrino y la madrina en el bautismo de los recién nacidos para guiarlos en la vida cristiana y decretó que las iglesias fuesen consagradas. Luchó contra los herejes Velentino y Cerdón y sus doctrinas, pues ésos pretendían explicar la fe cristiana con especulaciones filosóficas apoyadas en esquemas gnósticos. Fue enterrado en el Vaticano cerca de la tumba de San Pedro.
