En el cuarto aniversario del comienzo de la guerra de Siria y ante el aumento de violencia hacia la minoría cristiana, la fundación de la Santa Sede Ayuda a la Iglesia Necesitada ha decidido lanzar una campaña de emergencia para socorrer a los cristianos que permanecen en el país en condiciones de refugiados. La pequeña comunidad se encuentra alojada en las aldeas al norte del país, así como en Damasco.
Todas las organizaciones humanitarias coinciden en señalar la guerra de Siria como una de las mayores catástrofes humanitarias desde la II Guerra Mundial por el elevado número de refugiados que está provocando: el 40% de la población siria ya no vive en el país. Siria se ha convertido en el país con mayor número de desplazados internos del mundo: cerca de 8 millones de personas han tenido que huir de sus casas.
En este escenario, los cristianos sufren además las consecuencias de ser objetivo de persecución por parte de los terroristas del Estado Islámico, como se ha podido comprobar hace pocos días con el mayor secuestro masivo de cristianos en la región de Hasake. Los yihadistas tomaron varias aldeas de provincia, que contenía la mayor presencia cristiana de toda Siria, y secuestraron a más de 200 personas.
Por ello, Ayuda a la Iglesia Necesitada lanza una campaña de emergencia para sostener a la pequeña comunidad cristiana que además de sufrir los traumas de la persecución no tiene como alimentar y alojar a sus familias. Los proyectos que esta institución va a apoyar en Siria son de carácter humanitario como medicinas, comida, ropa y alojamiento principalmente. Desde el inicio de la guerra, AIN a nivel internacional ha prestado ya ayuda de emergencia de 6,3 millones de euros.
